cryptocurrency terms and slangs

When you’re new to the crypto world, interacting among some geeks might be fun at first until you start getting thrown off by some slang you are not familiar with. But there’s really no need for FOMO. If I lost you there, I promise that this article would be all you need to start throwing off big cryptocurrency terms and slangs around like a crypto Wiz.

Let’s get started with some cryptocurrency terminologies.

Cryptocurrency Terms and Slangs:

  1. ATH (All-Time High)

The highest price ever achieved by a cryptocurrency.

  2. ATL (All Time Low)

The lowest price ever achieved by a cryptocurrency

  3. Altcoins

Bitcoin was the first and is the most successful of all cryptocurrencies. All the other coins are grouped together under the category of altcoins. Ethereum, for example, is an altcoin, as is Ripple.

  4. Bag

If you have a large number of units in a certain cryptocurrency, you’d have a bag of them.

  5. Bear/Bearish

If the price of a cryptocurrency has a negative price movement.

  6. BTFD

Acronym for “Buy The F**king Dip”

  7. Bull/Bullish

If the price of a cryptocurrency has a positive price movement.

  8. Burned

If a coin in any particular cryptocurrency has been made non-useable.

  9. CryptocurrencyCryptocurrency for Dummies - List of Cryptocurrency Terms and Slangs

This is electronic or digital money that uses technology to control how and when it is created, and also lets users directly exchange it between themselves in a way that is similar to Fiat currency.

  10. Cryptograph

This is defined as the study of making ordinary information difficult to decipher or understand.

  11. FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)

This is a situation where someone makes a decision based on the fact that they anticipate feeling left out on something about to happen. Mostly the rise of a particular asset.

  12. FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt.)

  13. HODL (Hold On for Dear Life)

This slang, which is actually a misspelling of the word “hold” is usually a way of telling crypto-holders not to panic, and instead, hold their assets for a longer time.

  14. Mooning

When a cryptocurrency is about to soar in both price and volume.  Your coins can get you #rekt when they fail or take you to the moon when their prices                        skyrocket. Famous example? When Bitcoin price sprang up from 900 to 20,000 USD in 2017!

  1. Rekt

To suffer losses from coins that have dropped in value.

Yes, “rekt” comes from the word “wrecked” in gaming and is used when a player gets completely destroyed in a game. So when someone loses a great deal of money from their collapsed coins, they get #rekt!

  2. SHILL

Someone purposely promoting something for their own benefit. The word “shill” didn’t originate in the crypto world, but there are many reasons why this term became popular in this space. Who would shill, you ask? Most likely, someone who has invested in a particular coin that isn’t doing so hot, and is hoping other people would buy it and bump the price up. It’s all for personal gains.

  3. WHALE

An investor who owns five percent or more of any cryptocurrency coin. For instance, in the case of Bitcoin, a whale would be someone who owns as much as 8 billion USD worth of Bitcoin (assuming the total value of all Bitcoins in the world is 160.4 billion USD). That’s the same amount of money as giving 24.38 USD to every single person living in the US!.

  4. Pump and dump

Pump happens when a great ton of attention leads to a coin’s price increase; dump happens when the coin’s price crashes after an associated spread of negative emotions.

Pump and dump is yet another tactic used by groups to manipulate the sentiments of the crypto market. Beware of what the whales do—if they pump and dump, you may see big waves in the crypto’s value!

  5. When Lambo?

“When are we going to get rich?”

You’ve got to be rich to own a Lamborghini and many people believe that investing in crypto is one way to get rich (fast). When you find yourself hoping for a               spike in BTC’s price, ask yourself, “When Lambo?”
