Meta is pulling the plug on Messenger Lite on Android

Meta’s Messenger Lite App for Android Discontinuation: What You Need to Know

Meta’s Messenger Lite app for Android is set to be discontinued by September, according to a report by 9to5Google. The app was designed to provide a streamlined way to communicate with people on Meta’s Messenger platform. However, users will no longer be able to access the app after September 18th.

When users open the Messenger Lite app, they will reportedly receive a prompt guiding them to switch to the main Messenger app. Additionally, the app will not be available for download on the Google Play Store for new users.

Meta has officially confirmed the closure of Messenger Lite in a statement to TechCrunch. A Meta spokesperson stated, “Starting August 21, people using the Messenger Lite app for Android will be directed to Messenger or FB Lite to send and receive messages on Messenger.”

This announcement comes shortly after another significant change to Messenger for Android was revealed. Meta recently announced that Messenger will no longer be available as the default SMS app on Android devices starting from September 28th.
